Thrifting the Nation: Colorado vs Rumors Boutique

6 days in Colorado. Two Girls. 56 thrift stores. One minivan. 1,200 pounds of clothes.  Worn cowboy boots. Open highways. Turquoise jewelry. Black Mountains. Red Rocks.

We arrived in Colorado after 36 hours of no sleep. Our days were spent digging in piles of clothing and hunting for amazing items to bring back to the Rumors kids.

Acid washed denim. Navajo prints. Western crop leather jackets. High waist vintage denim. Over-sized men’s cardigans. Vintage earrings. Motorcycle jackets. You name it we got it.

Rumors Boutique has been open almost 5 years. I wonder how many items we’ve recycled. Looking at this pile first thing in the morning I am reminded oh how amazing thrift culture is.

Ute Indians inhabit mountain areas of southern Rocky Mountains since around 1500 A.D. making these Native Americans the oldest continuous residents of Colorado.

Bright fabrics on sun kissed skin. When we weren’t in dark thrift stores, we spent hours under the suns surrounded by nature. The seasons are changing and the trees are a canvas of bright reds, orange and yellow.

Drinking water fresh from the spring. The water is known for it’s healing quality.

Stargirl for life. I had to fight a kid to get her out of my spaceship.

Hidden between Garden of the Gods and America’s most famous mountain, Pikes Peak, lies the magical town of Manitou Springs.

“Manitou”,a Native American word for “spirit”, describes this beautiful mountain community. Eleven naturally carbonated mineral spring fountains, located throughout this Historic town, run free for all who wish to enjoy the healing benefits. The Ute, Cheyenne and other Native Americans considered this area sacred for the healing springs and clean mountain air.

You have to stop by the Mate Factor. In this world of Starbucks, Casey’s waited her whole adult life to find an yerba mate shop. The decor is very wooden, rustic, cool, and quite relaxing. The ice tea, sandwiches, and cookies taste very fresh and wholesome, and are very reasonably priced. Good place to stop for a quick bite while in Manitou Springs. The pamphlets there are also quite interesting to read. The bathroom is a collage of  pictures of Jesus Christ, farmers, hippies holding protest signs and pages ripped out of proper etiquette books for children. I like my Mate’ Anarchist and Punk as hell.

Casey spent her 16th summer attending the Summit Ministries in Manatee Springs. She’s feeling really nostalgic in this picture.

Happy to be Alive. And here.

Native American Artisans can gladly take all of my money. This bead work is sick

Colorado. The best place for a vacuum salesmen to move.

We shipped over a 1,000 pounds of clothes, boots, belts, and jewelry back to Richmond. You should have seen the parking lot full of clothes while we sorted our boxes to send home.

Denver brews more beer than any other American City. What a great place to live.

We stopped by to check out the bar THREE KINGS It’s a great punk rock dive bar. If you like cheap beer, pinball, loud punk music and hanging out with fellow enthusiasts of those thing then you’ll love this place.
They also have a monthly punk rock garage sale with all kinds of cool used records, artwork and collectibles for sale. It’s also free to set up a table. While we were there we met some amazing ladies. Denver females run the scene. There are huge Billboards for Roller Derby and the ladies are not afraid to speak up and say hello to strangers.

Manitou Springs is a vibrant artisan community, home to world class art, music, theater and sidewalk sculpture displays. The Historic District is lined with unique art galleries, one of a kind gift shops and trading posts with handcrafted Native American treasures.

Morning Monday Mimosa for the ladies of Rumors.

If you are Vegan or Vegetarian, or you just love a wonderful meal and a great local spot be sure to check out  WaterCourse Foods and Bakery they have enjoyed local, national and international acclaim for its lovingly prepared vegetarian comfort food and sumptuous baked goods. A vegetarian restaurant named for a book about animals escaping the life they don’t like for the one they dream of? We’re down.

Waking up in the mountains surrounded by beauty. How wonderful life must be if this is what you see when you open your eyes in the morning.

We stopped by Shugas an amazing local find in Colorado Springs. Creative food emerges when classic aesthetics meet hip ideas. Colorado is very friendly to dietary restrictions and lifestyles.

Red Sangria for a cold night

Bruschetta with Brie, an amazing staff, and home made soups.

The ceiling was sprinkled with origami white birds and the walls were adorned with original artwork from a local artist. What was so inviting about this place is that it has a true sense of community. When I walked in all of the lights were off except a few dimly lit red ceiling fixtures and the movie Super Troopers was on. It was nice to see friends of the same neighborhood come together in a quaint restaurant and enjoy a movie together.

Mile high in the Rockies.

We leave Colorado very impressed. You are clean, beautiful and full of energy. Independent business’s that are truly unique and cater to please their customers. Vegan Gluten free bakeries and happy hours galore. Our spirits are forever stained with your rich prints and red rocks.

40 hour jam session 2010: Presented by josh

I was lucky enough to be invited to a 40 hour jam session held at the house of my good friends josh and lindsey. Musicians around the city who heard the calling came running with big muffs, electric guitars and anything around the house that could make noise.

This music experiment lasted a full 40 hours without the music stopping even once. The whole session was recorded for scientific purposes.
